2008 Mass Readings:

Sundays: Year A ; Weekdays: Year II

Jesus positioned himself in the borderland between ‘church’ and world as a lay person rather than a priest or levite. He attended the synagogue and paid ritual visits to the Temple in Jerusalem, but was never an official in either context. The movement he inspired was originally lay‑oriented rather than priestly, designed to be in the world but not of it. His company of disciples was very different in spirit from the Essenes at Qumran, who chose separation from the world and a monastic lifestyle. The world that Jesus inhabited was composed of villages, farms, hillsides and roads throughout Galilee and Samaria. His language brimmed over with terms borrowed from household duties, from fishing and farming, from trading and travelling. He spoke of mountains and wildflowers, sparrows and fig trees, and knew what happens when an ass or an ox falls into a pit on a Sabbath. His contacts extended across the spectrum from street people to rulers. Adrian Lyons SJ, Imagine Believing, p. 185
