ABOUT > POLICY FOR WORK EXPERIENCE STUDENTS

Jesuit Publications can take a few tertiary and secondary students for work experience each year. We normally accept students for short-term work experience only during the first two weeks of each month, excepting July.

If you wish to have work experience at Jesuit Publications, these are the steps in the process:

TERTIARY STUDENTS:

A. Email the Student Coordinator, Fr Andrew Hamilton sj naming the period when you would like to work at Jesuit Publications, your field of studies, the requirements of your placement, and what you would like to gain from it.

B. We shall reply to your application and, if we are free to offer you a placement, we shall invite you to an interview.

SECONDARY STUDENTS

A. First telephone [(03) 9427 7311] or email the Student Coordinator, Fr Andrew Hamilton sj naming the time when you would like to work at Jesuit Publications.

B. We shall let you know if there is a vacancy at that time, if so we shall invite you to make a formal application.

C. The formal applications should include three things:

1. A letter of application, saying:

a. why you would like to work at Jesuit Publications rather than other publishers,

b. what you hope to gain from the experience,

c. giving evidence of your love of writing, and of your initiative.

2. A reference from one of your teachers, addressing the points above.

3. A sample of your writing (essays, short stories, poetry, or anything else that you enjoyed writing).

D. When we receive your application, we shall let you know if we accept you for work experience. If we do, we shall send you:

1. Copies of the magazines we publish.

2. How we expect you to participate in the life of Jesuit Publications during your work experience

3. A description of the kinds of work we shall ask you to undertake, and of the skills we hope that you will develop from your work experience.
